As a teenager I discovered the movie version of this play, which had been written some years earlier by the great Peter Shaffer. Both plays are based on real lives, real events and are interpreted with great imagination and plausible sensitivity. As you no doubt know, Amadeus (which won eight Oscars, including Best Picture) was adapted from Peter Shaffer's Tony-winning play, which was itself based on a 19th century play that later got turned into an opera. Amadeus is a 1984 period drama film directed by Miloš Forman and written by Peter Shaffer. €�Mediocrity is everywhere” pronounces Peter Shaffer in the final moments of Amadeus. Not only is this EUTCO's biggest show, and the first at the Northcott this year, but beyond that, Peter Shaffer's play itself is brilliant. When I first found out I was going to be writing a preview of Amadeus for Razz, I was thrilled. The choice of the plays was based on the raised stage level in the school's PAC theatre. Sir Peter Shaffer's other plays include Amadeus, Equus, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Lettice & Lovage and Five Finger Exercise. Peter Shaffer's two greatest works are Amadeus and Equus. Meanwhile sixth-form casts performed Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge and Peter Shaffer's Amadeus during the two weeks. Set in 18th-century Vienna, Amadeus portrays the young composer as seen through the eyes of his jealous rival, composer Antonio Salieri. Based on a play by Peter Shaffer (or wait—was it Anthony?), Amadeus focused on what everyone concurred was a pretty banal theme: the war between cagy, politic, shucking-and-jiving mediocrity, and God-given genius.
